Fridges and freezers are handled differently
Fridges, freezers, dehumidifiers and air conditioners contain refrigerants that must be removed before the unit is scrapped. County of Simcoe sites charge a separate fee for these, $20 per item in 2026. Stoves, washers and dryers without refrigerant go to metal recycling.
Before the pickup
- Empty fridges and freezers and leave the doors open a day ahead to dry out.
- Shut off water to washers and dishwashers. Disconnecting is fine to leave to the crew if it's a simple hose connection.
- Gas stoves and dryers must be disconnected from the gas line by a licensed gas fitter before removal.
New appliance delivered without haul-away?
Some stores charge for removal or skip it entirely. A pickup can take the old unit from wherever it ended up, garage included, along with anything else you want gone at the same time.
Frequently asked questions
Can you take a gas stove?
Yes, once a licensed gas fitter has disconnected and capped the gas line.
Do you take broken appliances?
Yes. Working or not, they're recycled the same way.
Can you remove a basement freezer?
Yes. Tell us it's in the basement and how wide the stairs are so the crew comes prepared.
