What usually comes out
Old furniture, broken bikes and toys, boxes nobody has opened since the last move, exercise equipment, lawn mowers, tools, shelving, carpet remnants and scrap lumber. In basements it's often an old couch, a bar fridge and a pile of boxes. In sheds, it's rusted equipment and rotting wood.
Sorting keeps the cost down
Garage loads tend to be heavy on metal: bikes, tools, shelving, mowers. Metal and electronics are accepted free at County drop-offs, and unsorted loads cost about twice as much per tonne to dump as sorted garbage. That's why the crew separates as it loads.
Things to set aside
Paint, gas cans, propane cylinders, pool chemicals and pesticides aren't hauled. Set them aside and take them to a County household hazardous waste depot, such as the Nottawasaga site near Stayner. Everything else can go.
Frequently asked questions
Can you take an old lawn mower?
Yes, once the gas has been drained. Metal is recycled.
Do I have to sort things first?
No. Just point out anything you want to keep.
Can you remove shelving that's screwed to the wall?
Usually, yes. Mention it on the form so it's included in the quote.
